Summer update...

Here is an update of the work I have been making since university has finished. I have been working non stop, not because I have to, but because I love doing it, creating, setting myself a target and seeing how my initial ideas can change over the process.

I start with a black and white design in fine liner pen, as simple as possible before adding colour. I always make copies so I can come back to the original in the future with a fresh alternative. This records my starting point as a reference to my way of thinking when I start a piece. It allows me to review the work without the confusion of colour as this often adds a whole different meaning and tone. The simplicity of black on white and vice versa is something I really do enjoy as well.

I have been inspired by so many different things, rust, petals, fruit, even mould. At this point I am laying out all the ideas I have wanted to do that were not relevant to the confines of my previous briefs. I am not sure if this is a good or bad thing at the moment but I have so many ideas flowing that for the time being I am just going with it. Hope you enjoy my creative splurge as much as I have!...

        Isle Of Wight

So, although regrettably, University is over and I have now settled into a relaxing few weeks at home. Last week I took a short trip to the Isle of Wight with my very close friend and his parents. It was very peaceful and it was nice to reflect on the year and the potential of what could lie ahead. During the trip we visited the Ventnor Botanical Gardens which I must say were quite fascinating. You could definitely be forgiven for thinking you were lost in some tropical or far away land, yet it still retained an often royal, stylised feel to it.

Amongst the floral lustre however, the information centre at the front of the gardens had a very intriguing water feature that instantly took my eye. Often I see things that I find interesting to view in abstract forms. As with my ‘Rummage through the bins’ escapade, I was taken by the shape, textures and colours within the object and photographed several compositions that are less identifiable at first glance. Again, they may inspire future paintings but I am also enjoying them simply in their photographic form.

I have produced similar images to the following before, taken from the undersides of rusted boats at Lyme Regis and will put them up when I can find the disk!  For now, here are the best from the recent selection…
