Duplicity: Adornments

Summer Pondering...

The finalisation for the end project of last year was the first 3D piece I had made in quite a long time (blue adornment). I knew that over the summer I would continue to pursue this area as I really enjoyed it.
I was given a commission to illustrate GCSE papers for ZigZag Education in May, for which I had to show my vision of what certain characters might look like. It definitely inspired me to look in the area of something to do with performance or costume perhaps. This got me very interested in personalities and identity and I wanted to explore this further at some point.

I was really interested in Venetian masks, I suppose as quite a direct link to what I was making at the time and although I was still carrying on with my quite traditional style adornments, I knew I didn’t want to do something quite so literal for the whole third year project. Hopefully, the work, which looking back I am now not so keen on, would lead somewhere unexpected...

The four pieces above I don’t think have a particularly good quality to them. The one below however I feel is far more successful. It is less ‘literal’ and is more interesting as a piece of art as well as a functional item.

Earlier work...

Although the main focus of this blog is directed towards the 3rd year work for my degree show in June this year (more info nearer the time), I would like to give you a small selection of the type of work I have produced up to this point. Hope you like it and please, all comments very welcome!...

As you can probably see, I am very enticed by colour and it has usually played a large part throughout my work. It may not always be present in the end product of what I make but it is a great and exciting source of inspiration for me.
Line and tonal qualities also are very important to me. I love to explore texture and develop patterns and often I limit myself to simple black and white or grey shades as I find it an extremely successful way to improve on quality and spark new ideas.
